The international standard ISO 19835:2018, Non-destructive testing -- Acoustic emission testing -- Steel structures of overhead travelling cranes and portal bridge cranes, proposed and drafted by Shen Gongtian, vice president of CSEI and director of National Nondestructive Testing Standards Committee, was officially approved and released by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) on May. 29th. This is the third non-destructive testing international standards released by Shen Gongtian’s team after ISO 18251-1:2017 Non-destructive testing -- Infrared thermography -- Part 1: Characteristics of system and equipment and ISO 20669:2017 Non-destructive testing -- Pulsed eddy current testing of ferromagnetic metallic components.

This standard project was established in 2014 by ISO/TC 135/SC 9 and a working group was set up. After the project proposal, working group drafting, committee review and ISO approval, this standard is recognized by most of the 34 member states of ISO/TC135/SC 9, only experts from Germany and Japan made some revision suggestions. During the standard drafting stage, the China working group, organized by the National Nondestructive Testing Standards Committee, led by CSEI, consists of 18 experts from more than 10 agencies such as Special Equipment Safety Inspection and Research Institute of Henan Province, Baoding Special Equipment Supervision and Inspection Institute, Wuhan University of Technology and etc., discussed and revised the draft standard, put forward detailed explanation of accepting revision suggestions or not.

Release of this standard filled the gap in the international standards for acoustic emission testing of lifting appliances, marked China"s forefront of the world in lifting acoustic emission testing technology, further improved our country"s international influence in the field of acoustic emission testing. Through the development of international standards for non-destructive testing, a working model for the development of international standards for non-destructive testing in China has been established, and procedures and rules for the development of international standards have been mastered. At the same time, China was successfully elected as the undertaker of the secretariat of ISO/TC 135/SC 9 in 2017, with Professor Shen Gongtian as chairman of ISO/TC 135/SC 9. This is of great significance to our country’s continuous development of international standards for non-destructive testing and the improvement of the international standard of nondestructive testing.
