On January 13, 2017, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) formally approved the issuance of the international standard Non-destructive testing –Infrared thermal imaging– Part 1: Characteristics of system and equipment), which is the first non-destructive testing international standard drafted by China.

It has taken more than 6 years to formulate the standard, which is organized by China Non-destructive Testing Standardization Committee and led by CSEI to set up a China working group composed of 15 experts from more than 10 organizations, such as Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Guangdong Sate Company and Capital Normal University, etc. The working group discussed and revised the draft, which is jointly drafted by CSEI and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. At the same time, the working group discussed nearly one hundred revision opinions and suggestions of experts from eight countries including Germany, France, UK, Italy, Netherland, Czech Republic, Brazil and Japan, and proposed the detailed descriptions for adoption or not of the opinions.

The infrared thermal imaging non-destructive testing as a new type of non-contact detection means, is widely used in recent years. The standard will promote infrared thermal imaging instrument produced by China to enter the international market, and help to create a working mode for non-destructive testing international standards development in China. Besides, it has laid the basis for infrared thermal imaging technology to develop in non-destructive testing field, and expanded international influences of CSEI and China non-destructive testing, which is of great practical significance.
